The system uses Microsoft technology to analyse photographs of returned materials, rather than checking them manually.
This can be done for 20 products, including scaffolding, beams, props and panels. According to Doka, it has already been used to count 1.5 million items, achieving a 98% accuracy rate.
According to the Austrian company, its “AI Counting & Identification” method performs better than radio-frequency identification systems or counting apps.
The product is presently used at Doka’s yards, but may be rolled out to large construction sites.
Other AI tools being developed by Doka include one that predicts when rental material will be returned from a site, helping stock control.
The company is also using Doka 360, a customer platform that improves planning, ordering, on-site operations and returns.
Robert Hauser, Doka’s chief executive, said: “This helps us to process returns faster, get equipment ready for use more quickly and plan inventory more accurately. It allows us to establish an objective and traceable process that also improves communication. That builds trust with our customers.”
