Usman Khawaja makes big retirement declaration ahead of WTC Final

The 38-year-old Australia National Cricket Team star opening batsman Usman Khawaja has once again addressed his retirement from Test cricket.

Usman Khawaja has said that he has no immediate thoughts of announcing his retirement anytime soon because he is still enjoying his game and has the hunger to contribute.

The veteran opening batsman is still a key member of the Australian Test setup and has several times made strong comebacks in his cricket career, bouncing back from setbacks.

Despite going through a lean patch in recent times, Australian selectors have provided him with good backing, and he has repaid their faith by making good contributions with the bat.

He is all set to feature in the ICC World Test Championship Final for the second time in his career and will be pivotal to Australia's chances of defending the title, which they previously won by defeating the India National Cricket Team.

Australia will take on South Africa in the ICC World Test Championship Final 2023-25 at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground from June 11, and Khawaja, who has scored 1,422 runs in the current cycle - the most by an Aussie - would be looking to contribute big.

And when it's time to hang up the boots, I'll gracefully do that, whatever it be - Usman Khawaja

In an interaction with ICC, Usman Khawaja said that the age factor is quite irrelevant to him because he still has the hunger to contribute. He elaborated:

"To me, age is irrelevant. If I'm still enjoying my game, still training really hard, I'm still scoring runs, still contributing to the team where I can, I've still got the hunger.

"I don't really think of anything as different, but I'm very open. I'm really just enjoying my cricket at the moment. Everything that has a beginning has an end.

"I don't know when that end will be, but for me it's all about staying in the moment, enjoying it one Test match at a time, one series at a time. And when it's time to hang up the boots, I'll gracefully do that, whatever it be.”

I'm worried about how the ball is going to bowl to me - Usman Khawaja

Usman Khawaja was further asked if he is worried about the lack of clarity over his opening partner for the WTC Final 2025. He replied by saying that he is not at all thinking about his partner as he is preoccupied with himself and how he would deal with the strong Proteas attack. He said:

"Not really, to be honest. Opening is so tough...I'm worried about how the ball is going to bowl to me and what I need to do The opposite, whoever's opening with me is thinking exactly the same. Then we're kind of in the middle working together how we're going to blunt out this attack.

"It doesn't really change my game too much. If anything, the change was probably a little bit quieter without Davey. But for me, it's just about what I need to do for my team and then where I need to work with my partner while I'm out there.”

Since David Warner's retirement, Australia have partnered Steve Smith, Nathan McSweeney, Travis Head, and Sam Konstas with Khawaja, and Marnus Labuschagne is also in the fray to get the opener's spot.
