For the first time in San Diego Gas & Electric‘s 144-year history, an all-women crew — consisting of a welder, pipefitter and laborer — competed in the 2025 SDG&E Gas and Electric Rodeo, placing fourth.

The event, which tests workers’ skills as they vie for a chance to represent SDG&E at national competitions, was held at the SDG&E North Coast Yard in Carlsbad.

Tashonda Taylor, vice president of SDG&E’s gas operations, said the event  is “really a way for our teams to celebrate the trades, and just show their skill sets and allow our public, family and friends see what we do day in, day out to provide safe and reliable service.”

Taylor said there were “tons of people” at the rodeo, which featured four teams.

The all-women team represented SDG&E’s values of doing the right thing and championing people, said Anthony Wagner, SDG&E spokesman.

“We are very proud of their first-year success and look forward to cheering them on as very formidable opponents at next year’s rodeo,” he added.

The rodeo offered three different competitions allowing team members to mimic the type of work they do, such as pulling wires through a conduit, cutting pipe and digging with shovels.
