ESPN, TNT reportedly reach new deal on future College Football Playoff broadcasts

ESPN and TNT Sports are finalizing an agreement that will grant TNT rights to 1 College Football Playoff semifinal game each year beginning in 2026, according to a report from Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger.

The 2 networks had already agreed on a deal that gives TNT the rights to 2 first-round Playoff games through the 2028 season and 2 quarterfinal games from 2026-28. The new agreement extends that sublicensing package and splits the 2 semifinal games between the networks from 2026-28.

ESPN & TNT already reached a deal that grants TNT the rights to two first-round CFP games for 2024-2028, as well as two quarterfinals for 2026-2028.Aside from the championship game, the networks will split the broadcast of the other 10 CFP games in 2026-28 (barring expansion).

Last December, TNT had the rights to first-round Playoff matchups between SMU and Penn State, as well as Texas and Clemson. Those games also appeared on the HBO Max streaming service. But they featured the same graphics package as the games that appeared on ESPN. The Worldwide Leader will still produce the games.

ESPN and TNT have a similar arrangement in place for select Big 12 football and basketball games during the upcoming season. TNT will broadcast the Hawaii-Arizona game during Week 1 of the regular season. The network is expected to have 1 game each week.

It makes sense for Turner Sports to get in on the college football action. TNT’s broadcast rights to the NBA are ending when the 2024-25 season concludes. The NBA signed a new media rights deal with ABC/ESPN, NBC, and Amazon Prime Video that effectively killed a 35-year partnership between the NBA and Turner.

The Emmy Award-winning studio show, Inside the NBA, is also moving from TNT to ESPN and ABC next season. Warner Bros. Television Studios will still produce the program in a similar arrangement to the CFP agreement.
