Cher wrote, "I met Brian Wilson, cofounder of The Beach Boys, who I found one day sitting on the couch at Gold Star. The Beach Boys were recording not too far away at Columbia Studios, and Brian would come and sit quietly in a corner, watching and hoping to pick up a few tips from the master."
She continued, "Painfully shy, he offered to play piano, but Phillip [Spector] passed, although he let Brian play the tambourine and sing backup on a few numbers. A tightwad, he'd enlist anyone if he didn't have to pay them."
"Like Phillip, Brian was a troubled genius who wrote all those Beach Boys Songs as if he'd been out surfing the waves his whole life, when he never had," Cher continued. "He liked me because I was young and unintimidating, so we became friends."
The Oscar-winner concluded, "One day I was playing with the machine that punched letters into plastic tape for labeling equipment and decided to make Brian a bracelet. Because of my undiagnosed dyslexia, it came out as 'I Love You, Brain. It became our little thing and, by the way, he was the brain, with an amazing mind for music."
Spector's influence loomed large over Wilson's life. The inspiration for the song “Don’t Worry Baby” came after Wilson faced a frustrating day in the recording studio and was comforted by then-girlfriendMarilyn Rovell, per American Songwriter.
The song’s was inspired by Wilson’s favorite Spector tune, “Be My Baby” by The Ronettes. After he wrote “Don’t Worry Baby,” Wilson reportedly offered the song to Phil Spector for the girl group to record. However, Spector wasn’t interested.
Cher worked with Phil Spector for years before breaking off into a solo career with Sonny Bono. Ironically, she sang backup on Wilson's favorite song, "Be My Baby."
During that meetup at Gold Star Studios, Cher and Brian Wilson formed a deep mutual respect and a lifelong connection. Being in the legendary studio allowed Cher to see his creative process up close long before the rest of the world fully understood his brilliance.
