Views from a Special Olympics Orange County North Carolina Team Member
A perspective from Greg Butler
Some of the Special Olympics Orange County North Carolina practices and events have been super challenging, but working through challenges can be helpful. That being said I have tried to be careful with volume and to take good care of my health. Participating in Special Olympic Orange County North Carolina sports has helped motivate me to attempt to be lean and strong.
I’ve been working out for almost twenty years, but l haven’t always pushed myself substantially or as hard as feasible in my workouts. With Special Olympic sports l’ve wanted to do well and be safe and l knew training could help. They’ve helped motivate me to push harder to improve and to try to optimize my fitness. Fitness often helps make life safer, easier and more fun. Training for, participating in and being involved with the Special Olympics has trickled into other life areas.
I’ve met many people through Special Olympics Orange County North Carolina who’ve helped me with relationships, employment, housing, nutrition, a Muscle and Fitness competition, and much more. Through years of being homeless people and programing associated with Special Olympics Orange County North Carolina helped lift my health, well-being and quality of life. I’ve struggled with physical health conditions including on and off obesity and high blood pressure for years, but since starting the Special Olympics, and being in sports with them every season l’ve avoided obesity, became stronger than l ever was in certain ways and became about as lean as l ever was as an adult.
It’s great that the Special Olympics Orange County North Carolina coordinator and all the coaches, parents, athletes and supporters help make everything Special Olympics as fun and as accessible as they do, because not many forms of physical activity are as rewarding as sports often are. Special Olympic teammates and sports have reminded me on many occasions that we’re all a team and are all very interconnected, attributed and dependent on many.
I started being an assistant coach with the Special Olympics earlier this year and that has helped me have a more of a platform to inspire and positively influence others. I was diagnosed with autism, a TBI, mild mr and other conditions and have taken many medications so can relate to many other Special Olympic athletes. In spite of various health conditions and struggles I have been involved in many sports, have been a fitness model and have worked out in gyms every week since 2022, and most weeks since high school.
As an assistant coach I’ve helped teach and reinforce that people with intellectual, developmental and conditions like chronic homelessness can positively contribute in roles often known for their social and etc requirements. The Special Olympics have given me a greater platform to inspire from.
It would be an honor to be in the Special Olympics national and/or world games, hopefully they would help me obtain an even greater platform to inspire people from. How l’ve done in the Special Olympics to this point has hopefully been an inspiring and educational demonstration or reminder of what someone with the often said to be hindering and incapacitating conditions I have can do, with appropriate teamwork.
