The Derby that started them all takes place on Saturday, with the 2025 running of one of the world’s most famous horse races taking place on Epsom Downs.
That is of course the feature of the eight-race card from the track, but there are plenty of good betting races besides, including a couple of five-furlong sprints over the fastest course in the country.
Our expert, Clive Gildon, has three selections on the card including one at a tasty price for the big race.

14:10 Epsom – Ruby’s Profit 14:45 Epsom – Spartan Arrow 15:30 Epsom – Stanhope Gardens14:10 Epsom – Ruby’s Profit
The five-furlong course at Epsom is straight and downhill for most of the way, making it one of the purest tests of speed in British horse racing.
You want speed and the ability to stay straight to win races like the 3yo Dash. Ruby’s Profit has both of those and can prove a cut above her rivals from stall 18 of 18.
That draw ensures that there is nothing between Ruby’s Profit and the stands’ side rail, down which many winners at this track have thundered over the years.
Epsom’s slightly quirky track is no problem, either. Last time Ruby’s Profit blew away the field at Goodwood, another track where those with a tendency to hang can prove wayward. She stayed straight and true, never seeing a rival as she won by half a length.
The placed horses that day, Mademoiselle and Naana’s Sparkle, are in opposition again. They have a pull in the weights that gives them a chance of reversing the form, but the draw can be pivotal in Ruby’s Profit confirming the form from last time.
14:45 Epsom – Spartan Arrow
The following race, known as the Dash, is much the same as Ruby’s Profit’s race, but it is open to older horses.
There are some real veterans in here, but the relatively sprightly five-year-old Spartan Arrow has the same sort of draw as Ruby’s Profit and can take advantage to land a second course-and-distance win this year.
Spartan Arrow has only recently joined Archie Watson and, after a run to get fit he won at Wolverhampton and came here in April. He ran out a winner by two and a half lengths that day, a huge margin for a five-furlong sprinter.
Since then Spartan Arrow has run at York but he was just marking time. The Dash is his target and his connections could hardly have picked a better pace set-up.
He is in stall 18, one off the rail in this 19-runner race, with speedballs in each of the three stalls immediately to his left. He can tack on to the likes of Tees Spirit, The Bell Conductor and Clarendon House before pouncing late.
3.30 Epsom – Stanhope Gardens
You have to ask why Stanhope Gardens is still running in the Derby. His stablemate, Pride Of Arras, won a major trial in York’s Dante Stakes, while this horse was not ready in time.
Instead, he jogged around Salisbury to win a small race a couple of weeks ago. He is in the Irish Derby and trainer Ralph Beckett, who has already won that race with Westover, could have saved him for the Curragh. He has not.
Stanhope Gardens was the yard’s Derby horse over winter. He ran Delacroix, who may well go off favourite in the Derby, to a neck in a good race at Newmarket. With the Derby trials this year looking so ordinary, that can be taken as among the best form on offer.
In a hugely open Derby, Stanhope Gardens is the horse whose price is too big and whose chance is better than fanciful.
