San Jose: Casino employee arrested, accused of embezzling gaming chips

SAN JOSE — An employee at Casino M8trix has been arrested on allegations that she schemed with her husband to methodically embezzle gaming chips from her workplace to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars, authorities said.

San Jose police announced the arrests Wednesday in a news release detailing an investigation prompted by a May 23 call, reporting that a woman working at the gaming business off Airport Parkway had been pocketing chips — then handing them off to her husband to cash out.

The investigation — conducted by the San Jose police Division of Gaming Control and Financial Crimes Unit — was prompted by claims that Ellen Mangundayao, 38, of San Jose, had been working with her husband, 41-year-old Mark Mangundayao, to steal chips between May 1 and May 22.

Police say that when they located and arrested Ellen Mangundayao on May 30, she was carrying about $4,750 worth of casino chips. A search of two homes associated with the couple reportedly led to the seizure of nearly $10,000 worth of casino chips and $75,000 in cash.

While the initial investigation covered about a month of alleged misconduct, police said detectives suspect the couple “conspired in the embezzlement of hundreds of thousands of dollars over several years.”

The Mangundayaos were booked on suspicion of felony embezzlement and conspiracy, police said. Court and jail records show that as of Wednesday, they had not been criminally charged and were not in jail custody.
