A study presented at Nutrition 2025 suggests coffee consumption may promote healthy aging in women

The recent study presented at Nutrition 2025 has captured significant attention, suggesting that moderate coffee consumption may promote healthy aging among women. According to the findings, women who consumed 1-3 cups of caffeinated coffee daily during their 50s demonstrated a higher likelihood of reaching advanced age without major chronic diseases and maintaining good cognitive, physical, and mental health . This observational study analyzed data from over 47,000 participants and revealed a compelling correlation between moderate caffeine intake and enhanced longevity .

There is a laundry list of ailments whose prevention has been linked to regular, moderate coffee consumption, primarily attributed to a combination of caffeine and polyphenols. Those include Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, chronic kidney disease and liver diseases such as cirrhosis and hepatitis.3456

Many of us grew up being told that caffeine was detrimental to our health, but in many cases, that school of thought is now démodé. Stephanie Coulter, M.D., FACC, FASE, a cardiologist, points to a 2023 review on the impact of coffee consumption on cardiovascular health.7 The meta-analysis of 17 recent studies, which looked at more than 230,000 participants, found that “moderate coffee consumption leads to a decrease in all-cause and cardiovascular-related mortality, hypertension, cholesterol, heart failure and atrial fibrillation.”

Researchers examined food frequency questionnaires to look at caffeine intake from decaf and regular tea, cola, and decaf and regular coffee. They determined a baseline exposure based on the average of the 1984 and 1986 food frequency questionnaires.

They examined caffeine consumption in 80 milligram (mg) increments. They looked at coffee in 8-ounce cups a day and cola in 12-ounce glasses a day.

While the results are promising, it is essential to acknowledge that the study's observational nature precludes definitive conclusions regarding causality. The specific benefits were linked exclusively to caffeinated coffee consumption rather than other beverages such as tea or decaffeinated coffee . Nonetheless, these insights contribute significantly to our understanding of dietary factors influencing aging in women. Further research is warranted to explore the underlying mechanisms by which caffeine may exert its effects on health outcomes as individuals age.
