Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni demolished in Virender Sehwags verdict on Digvesh Rathis ban in IPL 2025

Former Indian batsman Virender Sehwag criticized the IPL organizers for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) spinner Digvesh Rathi receiving a one-match suspension. Sehwag pointed out past instances where senior players like MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli showed similar behavior on the field but were not penalized.

Digvesh Rathi had a breakthrough season in IPL 2025 with impressive bowling performances. However, the young spinner received multiple warnings for his aggressive celebrations. Notably, he faced a one-match suspension after giving a send-off to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opener Abhishek Sharma.

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Virender Sehwag said that the one-match ban given to Digvesh was too severe. Sehwag added that the incident could have been overlooked considering his inexperience.

"I thought that the ban was a bit harsh. The boy is playing in his first year in the IPL. MS Dhoni had barged into the ground, he was not banned then," Sehwag said.

"Virat Kohli has spoken to umpires in that tone, who knows how many times, he was also not banned. So, Digvesh Rathi could have been spared, because he is a young player, just coming into the scene, could have let that one go," he added.

During an IPL 2019 match against Rajasthan Royals at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, MS Dhoni walked onto the field to challenge the on-field umpires over a disputed no-ball call. The Chennai Super Kings captain was visibly upset with the decision and confronted the officials.

Digvesh Rathi Brought Out a Variation of His Notebook Celebration Against RCB

Digvesh Rathi once again made headlines after attempting to run out Jitesh Sharma at the non-striker’s end during the match between LSG and RCB. The umpire ruled Jitesh not out, and LSG skipper Rishabh Pant also chose to withdraw the appeal.

Pant was applauded for prioritizing sportsmanship, while Digvesh’s role in the incident drew mixed reactions. The leg spinner had already drawn attention earlier in the same match when he brought back his controversial ‘notebook’ celebration.

Rathi pretended to sign Jitesh’s name on the ground after the dismissal, but it was later overturned due to a no-ball. He finished the match with figures of 0/36 from four overs and wrapped up his IPL 2025 campaign with 14 wickets at an economy rate of 8.25.

I Am Disappointed When the Spirit of the Game Is Invoked - Harsha Bhogle

Famous Indian commentator Harsha Bhogle weighed in on the controversy surrounding the 'spirit of cricket' debate that followed Rathi's attempted run-out. Bhogle said that he had no objection to the umpire ruling not out.

"I have no problem with the umpire turning down the appeal if he thinks the non-striker was inside the crease when the bowler's arm had crossed the point where he is expected to release the ball. I am disappointed when the spirit of the game is invoked. You play by the laws," Harsha posted on X (formerly Twitter).
