PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks signed veteran infielder Nicky Lopez to a minor league deal on Tuesday after infielder Ildemaro Vargas opted out of his contract, according to the transactions page.
Lopez is a versatile defensive player with 686 games of major league experience dating back to 2019. The 30-year-old is a career .245/.310/.311 hitter from the left side with seven home runs.
He’s played over 2,000 innings at both shortstop and second base with 443 frames at third and minimal playing time in left field.

Lopez has played 18 MLB games this season between the Los Angeles Angels and Chicago Cubs, and he spent most of his career with the Kansas City Royals (2019-23).
Vargas returned to the Diamondbacks for a third stint last winter, competing for a roster spot in spring training. He lost out on the final utility role to Garrett Hampson, who has since been designated for assignment and signed by the Cincinnati Reds.
With Tim Tawa taking over a utility role and top prospect Jordan Lawlar reaching the big leagues as a backup infielder, the path to making the major league squad appeared to be limited. Reno also rosters Blaze Alexander, who is on the 40-man roster and can play multiple positions, including the outfield.
Vargas slashed .261/.330/.397 with the Aces this season.
