For millions of travelers across the globe, Italy remains the pinnacle of a European vacation destination -- the ultimate combination between delicious food, favorable weather and plenty of rich culture available at a moment's notice.
Sadly, the fan-favorite European tourist hotspot has recently seen a revised travel warning from the U.S. State Department, encouraging travelers to 'exercise increased caution' upon reaching Italy.
Previously, Italy shared the same basic Level 1 travel advisory as most other European nations, urging travelers to 'exercise normal precautions' when visiting the continent.
Due to the ongoing threat of terrorist-related violence, however, the State Department has seen fit to bump Italy's travel advisory up to Level 2.
"There is risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in Italy," wrote the government agency.
Currently, the State Department has a total of four separate levels for international travel advisories, ranging from Level 1, to Level 2 ('exercise increased caution'), to Level 3 ('reconsider travel) to Level 4 ('do not travel').
While Italy is still a far cry away from the highly restrictive warning of a Level 4 travel advisory, the State Department nevertheless asks any U.S. citizens traveling to Italy to take proper measures in order to avoid any potential incidents.
Above all else, the State Department advises American tourists to avoid certain high-risk areas that could be targeted by terrorist dissidents, including 'transportation centers, shopping malls and markets, local government buildings, hotels, clubs and restaurants.'
For those who still plan on venturing to the country, the State Department has asked that they remain alert in tourist-heavy spaces, check local for any breaking news stories, and to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive up-to-date messages from the U.S. Embassy.
Along with Italy, France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom all currently have Level 2 travel advisories in place by the U.S. State Department.
