Do yourself a favor and wash your hair first. This allows the shampoo and conditioner more time to clean your hair and allows you to rinse away any product that might get on your skin."Shampoo and conditioner often leave behind a film that can clog pores on your back and chest, especially if you’re acne-prone," says Dr. Hannah Kopelman, DO, a dermatologist at Kopelman Hair Restoration. "By starting with your hair and then washing your body, you’re giving your skin a clean slate and reducing the chance of breakouts caused by residue."This is most important for people with sensitive skin, says dermatologist Dr. Stephanie Taylor, MD. 2. Lather your body with soap
After washing your hair, you can move on to the main act: lathering your body with soap. Though this shouldn't take too long.Unless you've been sweating or exposed to dirt or pollution, Dr. Kopelman says you only need to give it one full scrub. "I'm not a fan of over-cleansing," she explains. "Overwashing can strip your skin’s natural barrier, and I see that a lot in patients with dry, itchy skin. 3. Save the shave for last
The best time to shave is when you finish all your other hygiene tasks. Dr. Taylor says the warm water opens up the hair follicles, and the skin is softer, so you're less at risk for razor burn or irritation. "Shaving prior to showering may irritate the skin, particularly when the skin is not well moisturized," she explains. How Long Should Each Step Take?
While a nice hour-long shower can make you feel great, it doesn't take long to get clean. Dr. Taylor advises taking five to 10 minutes for each step.Five to 10 minutes is enough to be thoroughly clean without drying it out. You don't want to stay in a hot shower for too long, as this can strip the skin of natural oils and potentially worsen skin conditions like eczema.
