Certain kitchen habits feel a little controversial or awkward until you actually try them. Cutting a pizza with scissors is one of those things. It sounds odd, maybe even wrong, until you’re standing over a hot pizza with a dull knife or a missing pizza wheel, and very little patience. In my house, pizza cutters have a mysterious habit of vanishing. We’ve lost at least seven over the past 14 years, and at this point, it’s become a running joke that I’m secretly hiding them. I’m not, but I do buy my husband a new one every Christmas as a gag, because somehow they never stick around. One night, when yet another cutter went missing, we grabbed a pair of kitchen scissors out of sheer necessity. And I never went back.My husband still uses a standard pizza wheel, but scissors are now my go-to, and I'm not alone. Lots of people, including content creator BigBeauBrown, prefer using scissors to cut pizza. If this seems like a controversial opinion, let me try and convince you that the next time you pull a pizza out of the oven, you should reach for scissors first.

How To Cut a Pizza With Scissors

Using scissors to slice through a pizza is simple. All you do is lift up the edge of the crust, slip the scissors under, and snip toward the center of the pie. If you're cutting a pizza with a puffy crust, some pizza purists suggest inserting the bottom blade into the middle of the crust, then snipping down through the crust so as not to crush it. In my house, we have lots of hungry kids and are usually eating a frozen pizza, so we tend not to be particularly precise about our snipping technique. For us, it's all about speed.

My switch to scissors started in a moment of desperation, but they soon became my go-to pizza tool. Why? Let me count the ways.

First of all, scissors shine when it comes to control. You can cut straight down through the crust and toppings without pushing everything forward or tearing the cheese. This is especially helpful when you're cutting through thin crusts and pizzas with lots of toppings that tend to slide.
2. They make quick work of crispy crusts
I often make gluten-free frozen pizzas, and the crust texture is different, usually crisper, sometimes tougher and not always pizza-cutter-friendly. Scissors handle that hearty texture with ease, without dragging the toppings or mangling the slices. If you're a fan of thin and crispy regular pizza, the same idea applies.
If you've never used scissors to cut pizza, you might think it would be awkward, but it's surprisingly simple and efficient. You don't have to saw through slices or press down hard. Just snip, snip, snip and you're done!

@bigbeaubrownDo you use scissors to cut your pizza?

For rectangular or flatbread-style frozen pizzas, scissors are especially effortless. I recently used them to cut leftover pizza into cubes for pizza croutons and it was super simple!
A sharp chef’s knife can work on almost any style of pizza, but it’s inconsistent because it may not be sharp or large enough. On thin or crispy frozen pizzas, knives often crush the crust before slicing through it, and that makes a mess. Plus, with a knife, slices aren’t always clean. Knives sometimes do better with thicker crusts than the scissors do, but even then, you’ll likely need a steady hand and multiple passes to get even slices.
6. They're sharper and sturdier than a pizza wheel
Pizza wheels are fast and familiar, but they’re not foolproof. If the blade isn’t razor-sharp, it can tear instead of cutting your pies, and you usually have to make more than one pass over the pizza. I have broken a number of them, as well, so that's also a concern. I've had neither of these issues when I've used scissors to cut my pizza.

What Scissors Are Best for Cutting Pizza?
I always reach for my standard kitchen shears, but the folks who like to use scissors for cutting pizza are an enthusiastic bunch, so of course, there are scissors designed specifically for slicing through your pies.
You have lots of options, but the Loftern Pizza Scissors, which cost around $20, are a popular model on Amazon. People like the flat base and the high-set handles, which help make snipping simpler. The scissors are also good for cutting bread, bagels, fruit and more.
