Maro Itoje will captain the British & Irish Lions for this summer’s tour of Australia.
Head coach Andy Farrell confirmed his decision during the official squad unveiling at the O2 in London on Thursday.
Itoje, who captained England to a second-place finish in this year’s Six Nations, emerged as the front-runner after Irish rival Caelan Doris suffered a shoulder injury.
The 30-year-old becomes the first Englishman to wear the armband since Martin Johnson in 2001, and the first black male player to do so.
“It’s a tremendous honour,” Itoje said. “It’s a tremendous privilege. You think about the people who have held this position before and it’s remarkable. I will do my very best to make sure I contribute to a successful tour.”
