The proclamation recognizes nurses in “hospitals, clinics, schools and community programs” as critical members of Weld County’s health care system, celebrating their work in delivering health care services, supporting patients and contributing to the overall health of the county’s communities, according to a county news release.
The commissioners also highlighted public health nurses who provide preventative services like vaccinations, cancer screenings, tuberculosis treatment, the HCP program for special health care needs and the Nurse-Family Partnership program for new mothers, the release said.
“Our nurses work every day, shift after shift, to provide care, lead with integrity, and inspire through their service to Weld County,” Public Health Services Director Shaun May said in the release. “Their contributions are fundamental to the health and well-being of our residents.”
National Nurses Month started in 1974 when the International Council of Nurses designated May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday, as International Nurses Day, the county release said. Now supported by the American Nurses Association, the observance praises the vital work nurses perform across the nation.
On Wednesday, nurses from the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment attended the commissioners’ meeting to receive the recognition. The commissioners encourage residents to celebrate the nurses in their lives for their contributions to the county’s health.
