Two goals from Leandro Trossard helped Arsenal saunter to a comfortable 4-0 win at Ipswich Town on Sunday to push Liverpool’s chances of sealing the Premier League title back by at least a few days.
Gabriel Martinelli also found the net to follow his winner in Madrid on Wednesday, while Ethan Nwaneri came off the bench to add a late fourth in a very one-sided affair at Portman Road.
The outcome was never really in doubt as Kieran McKenna’s men played without any belief or purpose, seemingly resigned to their fate. Only goal difference prevented the Tractor Boys from being relegated on Matchday 33.
Things weren’t helped when Leif Davis was sent off for a poor challenge on Bukayo Saka in the first half, but in truth the game looked like it was heading for a routine away victory even before then.
Following their impressive elimination of Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, Arsenal were looking to cement their qualification for next season’s competition.
A rare attack from Ipswich ended with Julio Enciso making a mess of the final ball, which allowed Arsenal to counter. Martin Ødegaard fed Saka on the right. He cut the ball back to Ødegaard, who mis-controlled but luckily for him, Trossard was there to take the ball and direct a shot into the far corner of the net.
It probably should have been 2-0 soon after as Saka whipped a corner in to an unmarked Mikel Merino at the far post, but the Spaniard could not get over the ball and directed his header over the bar.
The Gunners didn’t have to wait long though as Arsenal continued to dominate their hosts. Saka raced down the right again and sent the ball across the Ipswich box, with Merino backheeling nicely into the path of Martinelli to tap in.
Things went from bad to worse for Ipswich as Davis was shown a straight red card for a foul on Saka, catching the England winger’s ankle with a reckless challenge.
The second half was a sleepier affair, with the game gone for Ipswich and Arsenal seemingly saving energy for bigger tests ahead in Europe, but the hosts did have their first real chance of the game in the 57th minute when George Hirst cut inside from the left and shot just wide of the far post.
Arsenal had their third in the 69th minute, and it came from a corner, though not in the usual method from the Gunners. A short corner saw Declan Rice dribble into the penalty area, before playing in Trossard for another clever but all-too-easy finish.
It was Trossard’s 11th goal involvement across his last nine Premier League starts against promoted opposition, with five goals and six assists. It was also the Belgian’s first brace in 127 appearances across all competitions, since netting a hat-trick for Brighton & Hove Albion against Liverpool at Anfield in October 2022.
With a home fixture with Crystal Palace to come on Wednesday, Arteta made changes in the second half, with Saka, Martinelli, Merino and Rice all coming off.
Nathan Butler-Oyedeji replaced Trossard late on to make his Premier League debut and almost scored, but it was another substitute Nwaneri who did find the net moments later. Oleksandr Zinchenko played a simple ball into the 18-year-old’s path, and he cut inside before hitting a deflected shot that looped in.
The win cements Arsenal’s place in second, sitting seven points clear of third-place Newcastle United following their loss at Aston Villa on Saturday.
As for Ipswich, relegation will be confirmed next weekend if they fail to win at Newcastle.
