Pakistan’s cricket team might have to appoint a new ODI captain soon. Their current 50-over skipper, Mohammad Rizwan, might resign. The wicketkeeper batter who assumed the role of captain in October last year isn’t happy with being rested from the recent New Zealand T20I series and will meet with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
Rizwan unhappy with getting dropped from T20Is
Rizwan was also rested against Zimbabwe but then played the T20I series against South Africa. After a gap with the Champions Trophy 2025 played in between, he was dropped from the T20I side once against the Kiwis.
“Rizwan is due to meet the PCB chairman as soon as he gets an opportunity to seek clarity on his axing from the T20I side,” a PCB source told Telecom Asia Sport.
Issues with Pakistan head coach
But it isn’t just getting dropped from the shortest format. Rizwan also doesn’t see eye to eye with the current Pakistan head coach and national selector Aaqib Javed. The wicketkeeper wished to play with five out-and-out bowlers against New Zealand in the 3-match ODI series.
But in the end, Pakistan fielded four bowlers and two part-timers. Rizwan isn’t pleased with him being named captain and then not having a say in the selection of the playing XI. This isn’t exactly new. When Aaqib came in as the selector, he took over control of the playing XI for the Test team. That’s why Gary Kirsten left and then Jason Gillespie followed his suit.
“Rizwan will seek more power in the selection of eleven in the match and there is a possibility that if not given full powers then he might resign from ODI captaincy,” the source added.
