Speaking at a PGTI pro-am event, Kapil reckoned that while there were many contenders for ODI captaincy, it should be Pandya who should succeed Rohit. Hardik was a part of the Champions Trophy winning team. He played a crucial role in India’s campaign, especially with the ball, serving as India’s 2nd pacer in the absence of Bumrah.
“To me, Hardik Pandya is my white ball captain. There are many contenders for the post but Pandya is my choice,” Kapil Dev said.
Earlier in February, reports had stated that India head coach Gautam Gambhir wanted Pandya to be India’s vice-captain for CT 2025. However, captain Rohit and chief selector Agarkar reportedly threw their weight behind Shubman Gill to act as the Hitman’s deputy.
Currently, Pandya is leading the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025. India cricket team will play their next ODI only in the month of October. While multiple reports have cast aspersions on Rohit’s future as the ODI captain, it remains to be seen which path the selectors would take.
“Ideally, Hardik should also play Test cricket and since he isn’t playing, India will need multiple captain for three formats,” Dev added.
At the time of naming Suryakumar Yadav as captain over Hardik, selector Agarkar had claimed that India needed a captain who would always be on the field. He was referring to fitness and injury concerns that Pandya was facing. However, Hardik has bounced back strongly, addressing all the issues with his effective performances.
