Greeley Climbing Collective celebrates grand opening weekend

Jared Overfield had chalk on his hands and his legs spread out on a crash pad as he took a break from climbing Saturday morning.

Overfield had been scaling one of the three bouldering walls housed inside the Greeley Climbing Collective during its grand-opening weekend. In bouldering, climbers ascend walls that reach 12 to 15 feet high, simulating climbing boulders without equipment.

Overfield, a Timnath resident, was one of many climbers taking advantage of the free climb day for the collective’s new location in downtown Greeley at 1516 8th Ave.

“I only boulder, so I’m not a rope-climbing person, but the bouldering area is pretty nice,” he said.

The facility, which also includes a wall for rope climbing, a fitness gym and a yoga studio, has been open to the public since March 15. On Friday, the facility hosted a ribbon cutting and University of Northern Colorado Student Night as a part of its weekend festivities.

Lucy Benton, a front desk manager, used to work at the Loveland Climbing Collective, so she has seen some familiar faces since the Greeley location opened. Members who live in Greeley are excited they no longer have to commute to Loveland to climb, she said.

“We did have a lot of people who came in and they know about us, but we’re still getting the word out to other folks who might not know as much about climbing or haven’t dipped their toes into that world,” Benton said.

In an interview with the Greeley Tribune last December, CEO and Founder of the Colorado Climbing Collective Bryan Hylenski said he selected Greeley for his third location because he viewed it as an “untapped” market. The other climbing location is in Longmont, which hosted the 2025 Ice Climbing World Cup in February.

The Greeley location offers 40-foot rope climbing walls that have three different levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Yoga classes started this past week, and instructors also teach classes in the fitness gym.

All the amenities inside the facility for newcomers could have them feeling a little overwhelmed, Benton said, but she and others working the front desk will ease those feelings by going over safety and everything else needed to enjoy a day at the climbing collective.

Starting Monday, April 14, the collective will start youth climbing clubs. These five-week clubs are open to youths ages 3 to 13 years and older. Starting in June, the collective will also host climbing summer camps for children.

For more information on those clubs, camps and other classes, go to climbingcollective.co/greeley. The collective offers day passes, punch passes and memberships on a monthly or annual basis. Climbing gear can also be rented or purchased on-site.

Benton and Overfield said climbing is a fun way to exercise and spend the day. Overfield said newcomers who try bouldering shouldn’t feel discouraged if they don’t grasp it right away and find themselves landing on the crash pads more than a few times.

“You’re going to fall,” he said. “The fun is learning to progress on a climb. Expect to fall, but enjoy that process.”
