San Diego State had two welcomes this week and two re-commitments to the program.

The latter, though, isn’t completely firm. Mountain West freshman and defensive Player of the Year Magoon Gwath announced he would remove his name from the transfer portal.

But with a draft evaluation looming, that doesn’t guarantee his return to Viejas Arena, only that he won’t shift to another college program.

Home is where the heart is. Staying home! I am excited to share that I am removing my name from the transfer portal. If I return to school next season, it will be as an Aztec! Miles Byrd, who is also undergoing NBA draft evaluation after a season in which he made the all-conference second team, firmly rejected the portal.

“Aztec nation,” he wrote on Instagram, “Please know that I will not be entering the transfer portal. Thank you for your support!”

The 7-foot, 190-pound Gwath started 26 games and averaged 8.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game. He had considered moving to Kentucky before deciding to exit the portal.

Gwath missed last season because of a foot injury and had to take a redshirt season. This season he missed five games with a knee injury.

He said that he would go through the draft evaluation before making a final decision on whether to return to school.

“If I return to school next season, it will be as an Aztec!” he wrote.

As to Aztec gains via the transfer portal, SDSU will roll out the welcome mat for Sean Newman Jr. and Jeremiah Oden.

Newman, a guard who spent two years at Louisiana Tech, averaged 9.9 points per game and  7.90 assists per game, a program record. He started 30 games last season for the Bulldogs.

Oden, a forward who played at Wyoming, part of the MW, also posted his status to Instagram, saying simply, “Let’s work. #committed.” Entering his junior year, he averaged 9.5 points per game, with 3.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists.
