Legendary India Cricketer and former India head coach Rahul Dravid has adopted a laid-back attitude to his role as owner of Dublin Guardians in the European T20 Premier League.
Despite the Dublin Guardians team’s poor start, Dravid has stayed away from team selection and match strategies and has mainly focused on supporting the franchise in the first-ever season of the European T20 Premier League (ETPL) 2026 in the Netherlands. Dublin Guardians, led by Ravichandran Ashwin and coached by Vikram Rathour, have managed only one win from six matches and are sitting second from the bottom. However, the ETPL is about much more than just the results, as it aims to grow cricket in countries like Ireland and the Netherlands.
Recently, Vikram Rathour, who already worked with Rahul Dravid for India and Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, has revealed that the legendary batter has behaved like a proper owner and has not tried to interfere much in cricketing decisions in the European T20 Premier League 2026.
The coach further revealed that Dravid's experience as a former India head coach has helped him understand the challenges of building a new team, and he has continued to back the side even after it failed to win its first five games. He added, “So, he understands how the teams can go and how the results can go. So, he's been very supportive through the initial phase of this tournament, where we haven't won anything. We didn't win any; there were no games out of the first five that we played. But he was; he has been very supportive. He's been really good, which you expect from somebody like Rahul anyway.”
Rathour has also credited Ashwin for making his job easier. He shared that the former Indian spinner follows cricket across the world and has strong knowledge of players and conditions in different countries. His understanding of overseas players has been a big help for Rathour.
Praising Ashwin, Rathour said, "As far as Ashwin is concerned, obviously, he has great knowledge of cricket, of cricketers. He's basically almost a cricket fanatic, I call him. He watches so much cricket, and he has so much knowledge of players from all around the world. That is like phenomenal.”
The coach added, “It surprises you, actually, at times, how much he knows about these conditions and these players. So, again, a great help to have somebody like him around. Because, like I said earlier, my time has been spent in Indian cricket mostly. So, for me, it was something very new and very different. But having somebody like Ashwin around has really helped.”

Notably, the ETPL has several big names connected with it. Ashwin, Glenn Maxwell, Daryl Mitchell, and Devon Conway are among the players taking part, while Dravid owns the Dublin franchise, and Maxwell is a co-owner of Belfast Wolves.
Steve Waugh, Matthew Hayden, Faf du Plessis, Jonty Rhodes, and Heinrich Klaasen are also involved as owners in the league. The ETPL 2026 final is scheduled for September 20, where Indian players like Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane, and Vijay Shankar are taking part for different teams.
