Arizona State big man Jayden Quaintance underwent ACL surgery and will consider entering the transfer portal, his father told ESPN’s Jonathan Givony.
“We’re looking to put the right people around him,” Haminn Quaintance said, adding that his son is expected to be cleared for contact in September.
Jayden Quaintance arrived in Tempe as one of the highest-rated prospects in program history. 247Sports rated him as the No. 9 player and No. 2 center in the 2024 class after reclassifying up to get to college a year early.
Mocked as a top-5 NBA draft pick in 2026, he played his freshman season at 17 years old, which is why he is ineligible for the 2025 NBA Draft.
Quaintance set the record for blocks in a season by an ASU freshman (63) and did so on Jan. 21 with 13 games left in the regular season, passing Mario Bennett’s 55 in 1991-92.

In addition to his 2.62 blocks per game, which ranked second among major conference players, Quaintance averaged 9.4 points, 7.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.1 steals.
Though he wasn’t ruled out for the rest of the season at first, his season was prematurely ended by a knee injury suffered in a Feb. 23 win over Kansas State. When he exited, he was one bucket away from matching his career high in points (20).
The Sun Devils went on to lose their remaining six contests without him, including Monday’s season-ending loss to Nebraska in the College Basketball Crown tournament.
He also missed time with an ankle injury earlier in the season.
Quaintance was originally committed to Kentucky and John Calipari, but he decommitted the day after Calipari left Lexington. When Calipari joined Arkansas, many expected Quaintance to follow the coach, but he instead chose the Sun Devils fewer than three weeks later.
ASU has more questions with Jayden Quaintance potentially gone
Head coach Bobby Hurley enters 2025-26 in a contract year and with roster instability looking all but certain.
Arizona State’s second-highest-rated freshman from the 2024 class, Joson Sanon, has already entered the transfer portal and signed with St. John’s.
From the 2024-25 team, the Sun Devils will lose leading scorer Alston Mason (13.8 points per game) and their third-leading scorer Basheer Jihad (12.7 points) due to their eligibility running out.
They lost their second leading scorer, BJ Freeman (13.7 points), in the middle of the year when Hurley dismissed him.
