Liam Lawson emerged from Sao Paulo’s rain-soaked qualifying with a career-best P3 grid position, but also with a familiar mixture of satisfaction and frustration.
The Racing Bulls driver had once again demonstrated his ability to punch above his weight in difficult conditions, but was left wondering what might have been after a self-inflicted error potentially cost him the biggest qualifying result of his Formula 1 career.
The Kiwi had the pace to challenge the established frontrunners throughout Saturday’s session, navigating the treacherous conditions to secure another appearance in Q3.
Yet when the opportunity arose to deliver something truly special, a poorly timed encounter with Fernando Alonso compromised his chances of extracting the maximum from his final qualifying effort.
Lawson ultimately recorded the fifth-fastest time, but will start third thanks to grid penalties handed to George Russell and Charles Leclerc. Even so, the result offered little consolation for a driver convinced there was considerably more on the table.
One mistake, one missed opportunity
Lawson was among the first drivers to venture out for the decisive Q3 shootout, with only Alonso ahead of him in the pitlane. That initially looked like a favourable position, particularly with rain intensifying and the prospect of improving track conditions rapidly disappearing.
However, getting too close to Alonso during his preparation lap disrupted his programme, forcing Lawson to abandon a second attempt and leaving him with just one opportunity to establish a competitive time.
Reflecting on the session, he admitted that his execution had fallen short of the potential offered by the car.
"I think as a driver you want to maximise it and I feel like we didn't quite today," he told Sky Sports after the session.
"We're in a really good place out of the box. Obviously we get lucky with the pit lane that we're further down than the top teams.
“So I went out there and then I caught Fernando too much on the first lap and had to abort the second one. And then I didn't get to really maximise it."
The margin separating Lawson from Kimi Antonelli, who qualified third, was just 0.226s. With Russell's earlier engine penalty effectively opening the door to a front-row starting position, beating the Mercedes youngster would have delivered the RB charger a potentially career-defining result.
Asked whether he believed that opportunity had genuinely been within reach, the 23-year-old was understandably reluctant to make any guarantees, although his answer betrayed his ambition.
"I mean, as a driver, I'm going to say yes, but obviously you never know. And obviously the rain was coming down. So by the time I got to the end of the lap... You never know,” he said.
"I don't know when everybody else did it. But, yeah, considering we got one lap, I think we did a good job."
A strong starting position, but unfinished business
There was nevertheless plenty to take away from the afternoon. Lawson's third place on the grid puts hm in an excellent position to attack Sunday's Grand Prix, especially if adverse conditions prevail once again.
But he was not about to pretend that the grid promotion entirely erased his disappointment.
São Paulo Grand Prix - Qualifying results"It's still a good place to start," he said to the media. "Obviously, I always take the free positions, but you always want to maximise as a driver as well.
"I think either way it's going to be a tough race here. I think unlikely it's going to be fully dry. But I think we have a quick car in all conditions."
Despite another impressive and timely display in 2026, Lawson still has no contract secured for next season.
Performances like this obviously strengthen his case, although he will know that a front-row start would have made an even louder argument.
