The Platteville Gilcrest Fire Protection District will host a free weather spotter training class on Tuesday, April 1 in Platteville.
The class will run from 6-8 p.m. at the district’s Headquarter Station 1, 202 Main St., Platteville, according to a Weld County news release. Residents also have the option to livestream the class.
Registration is required by Saturday and can be completed at pgfpd.org or by calling the Weld Office of Emergency Management at 970-400-3997. In-person registrations will be capped at 100 people.
Those who register to attend the class virtually will receive an email link in the days leading up to the class.
The class will be led by 9NEWS meteorologist Cory Reppenhagen and will focus on various types of weather commonly seen come springtime in Weld County, such as heavy rain, thunder, lightning and tornadoes.
“Our goal is to start building resiliency among our community members, and this class is a cornerstone in disaster preparedness,” Platteville Gilcrest Fire Protection District EMS Division Chief Matt Concialdi was quoted in the release. “Plus, it not only helps us as Weld County residents better understand weird weather, but also provides the chance to interact with and ask questions to a meteorologist for deeper understanding. We are thankful to all who helped connect us with Meteorologist Cory Reppenhagen and to the National Weather Service for the continued support in weather spotting training.”
The idea for the class came when the National Weather Service canceled its annual SkyWarn weather spotter training class for 2025. Previously recorded SkyWarn classes are available at weather.gov/bou/spotters.
“We’re pleased that Platteville Gilcrest Fire Protection District is hosting and putting on this event and pleased to provide support,” Weld Office of Emergency Management Director Roy Rudisill said. “The information presented can help people become more familiar with weather in general and how severe weather forms. Attending the class is a great way to increase situational awareness, helping people be more prepared when weather changes.”
