The Haitian Bridge Alliance condemned President Donald Trump’s announcement to terminate the legal status of more than 500,000 Nicaraguan, Haitian, Cuban and Venezuelan migrants admitted under the Biden Administration’s CHNV humanitarian parole program effective April 24.
“This is not policy — it is premeditated cruelty, rooted in white supremacy, anti-Blackness, and xenophobia,” the alliance said in a news release.
The CHNV program, initiated in 2023, was designed to offer a temporary home to migrants fleeing authoritarian regimes, economic collapse and political violence. In February, 500,000 nationals from these countries were approved under this legal pathway, according to the alliance.
HBA condemned the revocation of legal status for migrants, describing it as both a direct attack on immigrant families and a troubling indication that the Trump administration is intensifying its authoritarian and discriminatory policies. The news release also referenced remarks made by Trump during his campaign, in which he labeled immigrants as “poisoning the blood of our country.”
“Let’s be clear: this is a war on poor, Black and Brown people who dared to seek safety,” said Guerline Jozef, executive director of Haitian Bridge Alliance. “These families have followed the rules. Now they are being told they’re no longer welcome because Trump wants to rally his base with racist fear-mongering.”
The organization called on Democrats and Republicans to denounce the move, defend the CHNV program and take legislative action to protect those at risk.
