The Aztecs season came to a screeching halt Tuesday against North Carolina in the First Four, a disappointing result after 20+ wins in the Mountain West. The disappointment didn’t stop Tuesday, as leading scorer and assist man Nick Boyd announced his intention to enter the transfer portal.
The senior guard transferred into San Diego State after three seasons at Florida Atlantic University. The 2024-25 season was easily Boyd’s best season statistically, as he averaged 13.4 points per game (over a four point increase from a season ago) and 3.9 assists per game (over a two point increase from a season ago).
In Boyd’s social media post, he thanked his teammates, coaches and fans while also announcing his transfer intention “after speaking to my family and praying on it.”

— Nick Boyd (@NicholaswBoyd) March 22, 2025Where the Aztecs go from here is a mystery, as a leading-scorer is never easy to replace. In the current era of NIL and player movement across college athletics (even outside of college basketball), coaches of programs face more turnover each season.
Aztecs head man Brian Dutcher is no exception, and he will be faced with another offseason of improving his team.
