4Reel Fishing: Lake Mendocino looks like chocolate milk

Bass LOVE muddy water!  –  Matter-in fact,  I do too!    I always hook more bass in muddy water. Its not as tough as you think to catch fish when the water looks like “Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.”  Many bass anglers can often lose confidence and begin to struggle when the water turns muddy and starts to rise but, its all in their heads. Rising muddy water means more food and more food means aggressive bass.  Don’t let water color scare you. Whether a lake is crystal clear or chocolate milk the bass still need to eat. Its all about adaptation and recognizing changing conditions. Don’t be afraid to fish aggressively in dark water. My favorite bait in high, muddy water is a always a spinnerbait.  It is my go to bait.  If you aren’t getting a hook up with a spinner bait, then try is cousin, the chatterbait.  Dark colors are the best. But there is no reason to slow down your retrieve unless the bass won’t cooperate.

Clearlake : Attention to all you folks out there that say that bass are eating all the hitch in Clear Lake…So, what does the huge die off of bait fish that just happened on Clear Lake have to do with the bass? MIC. DROP!

Lake Mendocino:  Yup, our backyard lake is really lookin’ like chocolate milk right now. And, as stated above, I am just fine with it..  Here is the thing though, muddy water bass fishin’ is at it’s best when the lake’s water level is on the rise.  Lake Mendocino’s water level has been going up and down like a yoyo.  Nothing shuts off a bass like a lake been drained down.  So, when comes to bass fishin’ out hometown lake,  I suggest you fish it when the water is going up.

Lake Sonoma:  It has been quiet on Lake Sonoma.  Like Lake Mendocino, there has been some smallmouth bass being hooked.  Try fishin’ along the dam, and any other south facing rocky shoreline and points.  Keep your boat moving and cover a lot of water.  Unlike Lake Mendocino, the water clarity is much better.  So a white spinner bait or a chrome lipless crankbait should produce for you.  Good Luck…

Blue Lakes:   The sunny weather has gotten some fishermen back on or around the upper Blue Lake. With the lake getting stocked last week, the trout fishin’ from the shore has picked up some.  There are reports of a couple 2 – 2 1/2 pounders being caught.  Also, the same success can be said for those who are on the water trolling.  The fish are deep, 20 to 30 feet.  Also have been told that a few bass have been picked up on a white spinnerbait at the Narrows area.

Lake Pillsbury:  Good news from up on the mountain. The word is that the trout fishin’ is good right now!  Anglers that have made the trip up the hill, have been hooking into some really nice trout.  Some knocking on 3 pounds.  Try fishin’ off the docks with a nightcrawler at the Lake Pillsbury Resort.  The potholes have been NOT been filled, so if you take a trip to Lake Pillsbury don’t be in a hurry.

Don’t forget that a good day winter fishin’ could be two or three fish.  A good day in the summer could be six to twenty.  It’s all perspective, and always good being on the water.

Remember to keep it reel. Thank’s for reading. Blessings!
