In a March Madness First Four game between national runner-ups from 2022 (North Carolina) and 2023 (San Diego State) where both teams’ fate was highly in doubt entering Selection Sunday, both teams now can destroy any narratives claiming either school did not deserve to be in the dance.
A big debate on Selection Sunday was whether or not the resumes were strong for both UNC and SDSU, and now it is clear that the resumes were just good enough to earn a First Four bid in Dayton, OH Tuesday.
Did either team have enough “Quad 1” victories to earn a bid? SDSU went 3-6 in Quad 1 games, including big neutral-court victories over then-ranked No. 21 Creighton and then-ranked No. 6 Houston, both who ended up in the tournament.
UNC on the other hand went 1-12 in Quad 1 games, with its only win coming over a then-ranked No. 18 UCLA team on a neutral court.
Something to note is the return of Magoon Gwath, the Aztec freshman who has not played since February. According to Brian Dutcher, via Jon Rothstein on ‘X’, Gwath is available for Tuesday’s tilt.
The Mountain West Freshman and Defensive Player of the Year averaged 8.5 points per game, 5.2 rebounds per game and 2.6 blocks per game.
The only other ACC team San Diego State faced this season was California (the Golden Bears first season in the conference) and the Aztecs won comfortably 71-50 in December.
The winner of Tuesday’s First Four game, which tips off at 6:10 p.m. PST on TruTV, will play six seeded Ole Miss Friday in Milwaukee at 1:05 p.m. PST on TNT.
