Costco member demands answers after employee reveals ‘unspoken’ self-checkout policy – shoppers forced to count items

A COSTCO shopper was left embarrassed after being shamed at the self-checkout.

There was no posted warning about the policy they supposedly violated.

A Reddit user shared a story of their recent experience at a Costco store.

The Costco member brought 20 items to the self-checkout, but was told that they had too many items to use it.

“The gal at self check out for some reason rang up all my stuff and told me I had too many items,” the user wrote.

The customer apologized and said that they didn’t see an item limit anywhere.

But the employee said that it wasn’t an official policy – it was simply at the manager’s discretion.

The user claims that the Costco worker repeatedly complained about the number of items while ringing the customer out.

“Is this an unspoken rule?” the user asked.

    COMMENTER RESPONSES

Fellow Costco members in the comments reacted to the story, with mixed feelings about the self-checkout process.

“If they have a policy they should post it,” the top comment said.

“That said, 20 items is a lot for a self check, especially if it’s crowded.”

“Yup. It’s incredibly annoying. The scale can only handle so much,” said another.

“They don’t want members using the scan gun. They want to enforce a limit, but they won’t let us put a sign up for a limit.”

Many users complained that Costco doesn’t let members actually check themselves out at the self-checkout, slowing down wait times.

“They should be taking a cue from Sam’s and allowing you to scan items and check out via the app to make things smoother,” a Costco employee commented.

“But Sam’s invests more in tech than their employees, so it’s a hard line to walk.

“I like my pay and benefits as an employee, but as a member, I’d prefer to be able to use the same functionality as Sam’s Scan and Go.”

    COSTCO IN THE NEWS

A Costco member had the “Happiest Costco trip” of their life after scoring a major deal on some expensive food items.

The deal was so good, the user wanted to buy more than they could store at home.

Meanwhile, a Costco customer witnessed an egregious breach of etiquette while waiting to check out.

The user took to X with a video of a couple cutting the line and heading straight to the self-checkout.
