Local Government Meetings: March 17-21, 2025

This series of posts will be made weekly on Chapelboro to help inform our community about local government meetings. All meeting days, locations and times may be subject to change. Check town, county, and school district websites for additional information.

Budget season is getting underway in local government, with budget talks at the Carrboro Town Council, the Durham City Council, and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board. Elected officials are also looking to the General Assembly this week, as both the Carrboro Town Council and Orange County Board of Commissioners meet with their respective legislative delegations to share their goals and priorities. And of course nobody’s forgetting what’s happening at the national level: the Durham City Council this week will vote on a resolution condemning the attempted shutdown of the U.S. Agency for International Development, which has already resulted in hundreds of layoffs and furloughs at local organizations whose work focuses on improving lives outside the U.S.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

    Orange County

The Carrboro Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 18. This week’s agenda includes a discussion of the town’s budget outlook, ahead of upcoming conversations about next year’s budget later this spring. Click here for the full agenda.

Orange County Commissioners also meet Tuesday, March 18, at 7 p.m. in the Southern Human Services Center. This week’s agenda includes an annual update from OWASA, a report on Medicaid expansion in Orange County, and a review of policies governing the county’s advisory boards. In addition, both the Carrboro Town Council and County Commissioners are meeting with Orange County’s legislative delegation, to share their priorities and goals for this year’s session of the General Assembly. The legislative breakfast with Orange County Commissioners will take place Monday, March 17, at 8:30 a.m. in the Whitted Building; the Carrboro Town Council will hold their legislative breakfast at 9:00 a.m. Friday, March 21.

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro School Board meets at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 20. Superintendent Nyah Hamlett will present her proposed budget for the upcoming school year, and the board will also get an overview of a 10-year capital investment plan. Click here for the full agenda.

    Chatham and Durham Counties

Chatham County Commissioners meet Monday, March 17. Their meeting begins with a 1 p.m. work session that includes an annual report on affordable housing; then the board will reconvene at 6 p.m. with an agenda that includes a public hearing on a proposed new EMS station in Baldwin Township. And the Durham City Council meets twice this week, at 7 p.m. Monday, March 17, and at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 20. Monday’s meeting includes a public hearing on next year’s budget and a 5-year capital improvement plan, plus a resolution calling for the federal government to reopen the U.S. Agency for International Development. Thursday’s meeting includes a presentation on a proposed comprehensive plan for Parks & Recreation, and a vote to approve a Vision Zero Action Plan to eliminate fatalities from traffic crashes.
