Greeley-Evans District 6 works on community partnership plan, increasing community service

By September 2027, 100% of schools in Greeley-Evans District 6 will implement a community partnership plan.

District 6 representatives shared plans at Monday’s Board of Education meeting to pilot a business and community partnership plan in four schools — an elementary school, a middle school, a K-8 and a high school — in the 2025-26 school year.

This initiative is connected to the district’s focus on strengthening partnerships, particularly when it comes to communicating and collaborating with external stakeholders, according to Chief Communications Officer Theresa Myers.

The current partnership plan draft focuses on ensuring two-way partnerships that meet the needs of students and families, including academic goals, Myers said. These partnerships can include donations, volunteering, tutoring, job shadowing, guest speakers and more.

Myers said District 6 staff will revise the draft this spring and try to collect an inventory of existing partnerships in schools. After the pilot runs next school year, the district will use feedback from participants to revise the plan and ask additional schools to participate in the 2026-27 school year.

Additionally, under the goal to communicate and collaborate with partners like local government entities, businesses and community organizations, District 6 wants to annually increase the number of students and staff members who contribute to the community.

    D6 Gives Back

For more than two years, a committee of staff and community members have worked to implement the “D6 Gives Back Program” to increase and encourage staff involvement in the community. The program grants participants eight hours of paid leave to volunteer with partner organizations, according to Nelson Rodriguez, the district’s business community partnership administrator.

Between Oct. 7 and Jan. 31, 12 organizations, including Weld Food Bank, United Way of Weld County and Meals on Wheels, welcomed 22 District 6 staff members to volunteer, according to Annette Overton, the District 6 assistant superintendent of human resources. This resulted in more than 80 hours of community service from staff members.

“That is an exciting thing to think about,” Overton said. “So many of our organizations give to us, and this gave us the opportunity to then give back.”

Overton said the program plans to have a larger rollout next fall and implement staff recognition for those who participate.

District 6 hopes by 2030, 10% of staff will be engaged in annual community service.

    Student volunteers

The district also aims for 100% of schools to be engaged annually in a community service project by 2030, Myers shared Monday.

Staff has been working to formalize volunteer hours for students based on education level. A recommended breakdown — already implemented at a few schools — would be for students to obtain five hours of community service in elementary school, 10 in middle school and 15 in high school to reach 30 hours by the end of their public education career.

The district also plans to utilize Xello, a career and college planning tool, to track volunteering hours, Myers said. By 2025, students will log volunteer hours into a districtwide student management platform.

To reach the district’s student community service goal, the district will work with Bright Futures to identify volunteer opportunities in the community based on education levels, according to Myers. District 6 also wants to recognize students who complete volunteer hours and has pondered potentially introducing a pin or cord at graduation for those students.
