San Diego is home to the last major shipyard on the West Coast, with General Dynamics NASSCO building support vessels for the Navy, while BAE Systems and Austal USA provide major ship repair and overhaul services.
“As a Representative of the region, San Diego is optimally positioned to be a central partner in this industrial renewal and expansion of maritime greatness,” said Issa, who represents the 48th District in East County.
“I respectfully request that you and your administration carefully consider San Diego as an ideal choice for America’s new ‘maritime opportunity zones.'”
Trump had raised concerns about declining production of naval vessels amid China’s military buildup. The U.S. Navy has the largest battle fleet by tonnage, but China operates more ships.
Issa praised Trump for focusing on shipbuilding amid a “precipitous decline” in domestic capacity.
“Past administrations, previous National Defense Strategies, and published U.S. Navy assessments, have long opined about the need for greater emphasis and investment in domestic shipbuilding — but have yet to deliver,” said Issa.
“With your leadership and the focused effort of your administration, I am confident that the era of pontificating about the problem is over, and a new age of American maritime greatness is at hand and ahead.”
