SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Thursday is the last day that vehicles will be able to drive on San Francisco’s Upper Great Highway. The majority of the city’s residents voted in the November election to remove cars and instead make it into a park.
A pending lawsuit is trying to slam the brakes on that idea. The people behind the suit claim that Proposition K voters never should have been given the right to choose. Instead, they say it should have only been in the hands of local government officials.
Prop K passed by a margin of about 10 points, 55% to 45%, but drew controversy from residents on the west side of the city who largely opposed closing the road, according to data from Election Map SF.
In the meantime, the plan to shut down vehicle traffic through the Great Highway will continue.
This is what will replace the longtime McDonald’s at Stonestown in San FranciscoReportedly, 15,000 vehicles travel on the highway each day, and opponents of the shutdown say those cars will make an already busy area of San Francisco clogged with even more traffic in the neighborhoods.
The new 2-mile long, 43-acre park was announced to open on April 12. San Francisco Recreation and Parks is inviting the public to help name the new park by hosting a naming contest. Suggestions can be submitted until 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 16.
According to city officials, the park will include art installations, lounge spaces, seating for events, space for skating, bike racks, outdoor fitness equipment and a nature exploration area.
