Bhubaneswar: Opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has sharply reacted to the controversial statement made by senior BJP leader and Sambalpur MLA Jayanarayan Mishra, question whether the BJP is conspiring to divide the state.
Senior BJD leader and Nayagarh MLA Dr. Arun Sahoo has lashed out at Mishra over his statement that the merger of Western Odisha with Odisha was a historical mistake.
Sahoo said that the statement made by a person who is ignorant about the history of Odisha is really ridiculous. The BJP government, which came to power due to the Odia Asmita, is now attacking it, the senior BJD leader while asking the state government to take action against Mishra if it has the guts.
Even though more than 72 hours have passed since Jayanarayan made the provocative statement, the fact that no action has been taken by the state BJP president or the Chief Minister has disappointed everyone, said senior BJD leader and Athagarh MLA Ranendra Pratap Swain.
The chief minister should clarify his position on the issue, he demanded.
Notably, Jayanarayan Mishra, while attending an official function in Sambalpur on Saturday, courted controversy with his remark that people of the western region, earlier known as Koshala, were neglected as the coastal districts (Utkal area) enjoyed benefits.
Mishra had said that Odisha was formed with the merger of Utkal, Kalinga and Koshala region in 1936. He also said it was a “historical mistake” to get Koshala merged with Odisha.
