Ukiah Unified School District is excited to announce that Nokomis Elementary School has been awarded a $6,000 grant from the Save the Redwoods League’s Redwood Connect Grants program.
This generous funding will enable the school to launch an immersive educational initiative titled “Field Trip Through Time: A Walk in the Woods. I Notice. I Wonder.”
The program is designed to provide students with hands-on learning experiences in some of California’s most iconic redwood forests. Over the course of the school year, students will embark on five field trips to the following locations:
Montgomery Woods Hendy Woods Navarro Redwoods Richardson Grove Jackson State ForestThese excursions aim to deepen students’ understanding of redwood ecosystems, foster a connection to nature, and inspire curiosity through direct observation and inquiry-based learning.
“We are incredibly grateful to the Save the Redwoods League for this opportunity,” said Tom Rawles, principal of Nokomis Elementary School. “This allows our students to experience the majesty of the redwoods firsthand, enriching their education beyond the classroom and instilling a lifelong appreciation for our natural environment.”
The Redwood Connect Grants program, established by the Save the Redwoods League, aims to foster equitable access to redwood parks and provide meaningful, community-driven connections with nature. Since its inception, the program has funded over 300 grants, bringing thousands of young people into the redwood forests for inspirational experiences.
Nokomis Elementary School is one of 18 organizations selected for the 2025 grant cycle, collectively enabling over 3,000 youth to explore California‘s redwood forests.
