Looking to adopt a pet? San Diego County Animal Services wants you to try your luck at its Wheel o’ Fortune adoption event throughout the month of March.
Prospective adopters can spin the wheel to reveal the adoption fee, anywhere from free to $17 (puppies and kittens excluded), at both the South Shelter in Bonita and the North Shelter in Carlsbad.
Adoption fees cover spaying/neutering, microchipping, updated vaccinations and a one-year dog license for local adopters.
“In our opinion, the luck flows both ways with this deal. The person and the pet both gain an enduring friend,” said Vaughn Maurice, county shelter director.

South Shelter (Bonita) – 5821 Sweetwater Road North Shelter (Carlsbad) – 2481 Palomar Airport Road Walk-in Hours: Tuesday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.To adopt, bring a photo identification card, county officials said. Adoptions are on a first-come, first-served basis.
Adoption fees are always waived for pets who have been at the shelter for 30+ days, pets 8 years and older, and adopters 60 years and older, according to the county.
Not ready to adopt? County officials suggest fostering a pet. All supplies such as food, leash and bedding are provided and it helps animals adjust to home life, officials said.
