Mendocino College presents ‘Mendocino Stories: Instructions for Living in a Broken World’

From Mendocino College

The Mendocino College Theatre Arts Department will present “Mendocino Stories: Instructions for Living in a Broken World,” an original play based on stories of real people in our local community. The show will run for two weekends only March 13-23, in the Mendocino College Center Theatre on the Ukiah Campus.

Under the guidance of renowned playwright and solo performer Dan Hoyle, actor-educator Lucas Verbugghe and college theatre director Reid Edelman, students have utilized Hoyle’s exciting techniques of Journalistic Theatre. The result is an inspiring locally grown project reflecting the challenges and resilience of our community with honesty, empathy and humor.

This production will feature costumes and scenery highlighting the work of students in Mendocino College’s CTE program in technical theatre under the direction of faculty and staff members Steve Decker, Kathy Dingman-Katz and David Wolf. Stage management is by Sarah Jansen.

The talented cast features 16 actors, including many students and alumni of the Theatre Arts Department’s Conservatory Cohort ensemble. Many members of the ensemble were also involved in the script development process, a three-year project in which students connected with people in our community to listen to their stories, and then crafted those stories into monologues.

Then, in Fall 2024, Hoyle and Verbrugghe conducted a semester long class in which more stories were gathered and then shaped into a cohesive script as common themes began to emerge.

Actors in the current production who were also involved in the early stages of story-gathering and script development include: Kate Magruder, Stacey Sheldon, Jody Gehrman, Aria Silveira, Virginia Hanley and John Melsness. These core “journalistic actors” are joined in the play by additional actors including: Alicia Bales, Phoenix Carr, Eli Fowler, Schuyler Marcier, Jadyn Musselman-Chalmers, Esteban Orozco, Maggie Ramey, Kasper Silveira, Tina Marie Spagnolo Silveira and William Walls. These actors also practiced journalistic theatre, listening to recordings of the original interviews and often meeting personally with the people they are playing.

Hoyle calls this work “the journalism of hanging out.” The current play has emerged out of three summer intensive workshops as well as the fall 2024 full semester course. Students who participated in the development of this project but who are not appearing in the play include Jessica Lee, Henley Parish, Heidi Peterman, Ori Polkinghorne, Andrea McCullough, and Phaedra Swearengin.

Show times are 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 students and seniors. Pay what you wish preview is Thursday, March 13. Special discount show is Thursday, March 20, all tickets $10.
