An off-duty Gary firefighter was arrested on a series of charges, including operating while intoxicated, after striking an Indiana State Police trooper’s patrol vehicle early Monday along a northwest Indiana interstate.
State police said at around 12 a.m., a trooper was working a traffic-control detail on Interstate 65 southbound near the I-80 interchange when his fully-marked Dodge Durango was struck by a dark-colored SUV. The trooper sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.
Additional troopers later located a vehicle matching the description, with significant front-end damage, traveling westbound on I-80. Authorities said the driver failed to stop, led troopers through an active construction zone and continued onto multiple streets in Gary, where he disregarded traffic signals and nearly caused a second crash.
The driver eventually stopped near the Gary Fire Department along 25th Avenue and Jefferson Street.
State police identified him as Michael D. Rodriguez, 47, an off-duty Gary firefighter. Law enforcement said Rodriguez showed signs of alcohol impairment and admitted to drinking alcohol before driving.
Troopers also reported observing open containers inside the vehicle.
