Weld County began significant construction work on the bridge located on Weld County Road 17 between Weld County Road 28 and Colo. 66, which is expected to take more than three months to complete.
Construction began on Feb. 26 and is expected to be completed by June 13. The road closure will bring a new and improved bridge to commuters southwest of Platteville and northeast of Firestone, according to a county news release.
The Weld County Public Works team will complete the project, addressing several issues the bridge has developed since its original construction in 1966. Notably, the bridge’s substructure and superstructure, components that help support the weight of traffic, have cracked and need replacement.
According to the county, the cracks are caused by the bridge’s structural deficiency, as defined by the federal standards of the National Bridge Inventory. The bridge’s sufficiency rating is currently at 57%, and Public Works aims to replace bridges before they reach a sufficiency rating of 50%.
“Approximately 7.5% of bridges nationwide are classified as structurally deficient, and in Weld County, that average is closer to 5% due to the maintenance and replacements we do every year,” Deputy Director of the Department of Public Works Duane Naibauer said in the release.
Construction crews will also widen the bridge from 25 feet to 32 feet so that water can travel under it more efficiently. A leaking irrigation tube on the south side of the bridge will also be replaced.
A detour is in place, requiring eastbound Weld County Road 28 drivers to continue on the road instead of turning left onto northbound Weld County Road 17. Drivers will continue on eastbound Weld County Road 28, turn left on northbound Weld County Road 19 and then turn left again on westbound Colo. 66.
Detours and road construction projects can be viewed on the Weld County Road Advisory map at apps.weld.gov/publicworks/roadadvisory.
