The San Diego City Council has dedicated a day in February to honor San Diego’s first Black woman to work as a locomotive engineer.

The North County Transit District has proclaimed Feb. 25 to be Crystal Trent Day, named after the longtime county employee.

Trent currently serves as the supervisor of operations for the Coaster commuter rail and has worked in transit services for the last 14 years.

“Crystal is an exemplary employee to NCTD,” said rail operations director Patrick Cola. “She takes pride in the work she does on a daily basis. We are proud to have her on the team.”

Trent started working at NCTD as a Sprinter train operator, before becoming a conductor for the Coaster line and eventually being promoted to a locomotive engineer in 2020.

The North County Transit District proclaimed Feb. 25 to be Crystal Trent Day, officials announced at a Tuesday San Diego City Council meeting, to honor San Diego’s first Black female locomotive engineer.

“Operating a locomotive can be intimidating, but I learned to compartmentalize my fears and focus on what’s in front of me versus what’s behind me,” said Trent.

“Passengers trust you with their lives. My job is to ensure that I represent their trust and ensure they make it home safe,” she said. “It’s a huge responsibility, and I’m proud to be a part of it.”

Trent said her father, a Navy diver, serves as her inspiration in  life after teaching her the importance of determination and hard work.

Having a supporting community and workplace is also extremely important, Trent said.

“I believe in bringing people along with me,” she said. “Sharing knowledge and encouraging your team is just as important as self-growth.”

NCTD officials announced the honorary day during a Tuesday city council meeting.

“NCTD is proud to recognize Crystal for breaking barriers in our industry and is appreciative of the support of the San Diego City Council,” said Shawn Donaghy, NCTD CEO.

February is observed as Black History Month in the United States and Canada.
