Spring Training Miscellany: Cubs Win Yet Again, Boyd, Turner, Amaya, Busch, Keller, Brown, More

The Cactus League Chicago Cubs are unstoppable. That’s five straight wins to open up the spring slate, and we’ll just wonder to what extent that means anything …

Today was another day for the Cubs’ bats to put up big numbers, ultimately beating the Padres 10-5. Matthew Boyd threw a couple scoreless to kick off his Cubs Spring Training career, and looked like a veteran getting in his work (which I mean in a perfectly fine way).

Today was also the Cubs debut for Justin Turner, who reached base three times.

Trying to keep pace with his fellow “exploded in the second half last year”-mate in Pete Crow-Armstrong, Miguel Amaya had a three-hit day. Obligatory: if he’s actually as good as he was in the second half, the Cubs’ offense will be in good shape.

The bigger, stronger Michael Busch was in effect:

Ben Brown made his spring debut – and his first competitive-ish appearance since last season’s neck injury – and he looked more or less like himself. The 95-96 mph fastball, the hard curveball, and he even busted out the changeup a few times (got a whiff on one of them, too). Whatever this year brings for Brown in terms of role and level, I won’t get ahead of myself. We all know what the talent could do. For now, I’m just happy to see him back out there in a game, looking normal.

Speaking of trying not to take too much away from how a guy looked in a spring appearance: Brad Keller, in his two innings of work today, looked … perfect? I mean, he was throwing 95-97 mph on the fastball, throwing a nasty cutter and a nasty sweeper, and he was just pounding the zone. Spring is only spring. But it was impressive. You tack that on to the way Craig Counsell was talking about Keller last week and suddenly you do start wondering whether the Cubs will soon be strategizing on how to ensure they get to keep him at the end of Spring Training (he’s on a minor league deal, but can opt out if he’s not on the 26-man roster).

On the other side of things, Tyson Miller threw 10 straight balls in his first spring appearance before throwing his first strike. “Spring Training.”

Silly spring pitchers keep pitching Kevin Alcántara away, and that’s when he extends his arms on you and does this:
