After a weekend that saw the No. 23 SDSU softball team win multiple games as part of the Shriner’s Children’s Clearwater Invitational in Florida, including a walk-off grand slam on Sunday, the team fell 7-2 Friday against No. 19 Oregon as part of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
The Ducks got out to an early lead thanks to a second inning that saw multiple runs scored. Even after the Aztecs got one back in the bottom half of the inning, the lead was too much to overcome for SDSU. Oregon would extend its lead to 7-1 in the sixth inning, and the Aztecs added one more run before eventually falling.
The loss ends a streak that saw SDSU go 5-0 in the Clearwater Invitational, which included a win over top-25 ranked Alabama on Friday. Sunday in Florida was the real showstopper, as SDSU came from behind to win on a walk-off against Charlotte.
Down 8-4 in the seventh inning, the Aztecs rallied to score seven runs, capped by a grand slam from Shannon Cunningham to send SDSU back to California happy.
Although the Aztecs fell to the Ducks Friday, they still have a chance to rebound in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Saturday. SDSU is scheduled to face UC Santa Barbara at 5 p.m. followed by a matchup against UC Riverside at 7:30 p.m.
