(KRON) – Two Bay Area community groups are banding together to distribute free air purifiers as a result of the Martinez Refining Company massive fire that occurred on Feb. 1.
Healthy Martinez and 350 Bay Area will be distributing 1,000 free air purifiers to community members neighboring the Martinez Refinery on Saturday, Feb. 22. The giveaway is scheduled from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. or until supplies last at 600 Palm Ave. in Martinez.
Both groups have been vocal about stronger protections for the community and greater accountability from the refinery. Healthy Martinez said its goal is to mitigate the impact that hazardous air quality has on residents faced with frequent air quality incidents.

Contra Consta Health announced days after the fire that chemicals and combustion byproducts that can cause cancer, as well as heart and lung disease, were emitted from the smoke and fire.
