Tennessee and Nebraska no longer plan to play in 2026 and 2027.
The historic powers had a home-and-home series scheduled with a 2026 game in Lincoln and 2027 return meeting in Knoxville. Those plans have been scrapped, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported, citing sources.
Sources: Tennessee and Nebraska are canceling their upcoming football series, which was schedule for 2026 in Lincoln and 2027 in Knoxville. A driver of the move was Nebraska wanting eight home games in 2027 when they expected reduced stadium capacity because of renovations.
— Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) February 21, 2025Tennessee AD Danny White confirmed that the series is off by quoting Thamel’s post and taking a shot at Nebraska. White took issue with Thamel’s post implying that both parties agreed to cancel the home-and-home series. White says Nebraska unilaterally canceled the games and expressed frustration at the timing.
Correction: Tennessee is not canceling this series. Nebraska did. We are very disappointed that they didn’t want to play these games, especially this close to 2026. t.co/uSz7kAXk94
— Danny White (@AD_DannyWhite) February 21, 2025The news comes as there is increased speculation about SEC scheduling for 2026 and beyond. The SEC remained at 8 conference games for 2024 and ’25 after expanding to 16 teams with the additions of Oklahoma and Texas. The conference has yet to announced the scheduling plan for 2026.
This week, it was reported that the SEC is moving toward 9 conference games if the College Football Playoff adopts a new model. The SEC and B1G are leading the charge for 14 or 16 teams. The conferences would each get 4 automatic bids, while the ACC and Big 12 would get 2 each. Notre Dame would receive a bid if it finishes as one of the top teams and the top team from the Group of 5 conferences would also be receiving a bid.
Interestingly enough, CFP expansion could also lead to SEC and B1G teams playing each other during the regular season. We’ll see if that leads to a Tennessee-Nebraska pairing at some point down the road.
