America is in grave danger. Our constitutional democratic republic was carefully and deliberately designed by our founders to operate under the rule of law rather than the personal whims of any individual or group. In America, no one is above the law. Our system of government stands in stark contrast to nations under a dictator, autocrat, tyrant, a few self-appointed elites, or the authority of anyone not constitutionally accountable to the people. After considerable debate, our founders devised a system of rules and procedures, including checks and balances of three branches of government, to prevent anyone from having too much power.
Now our nation is being taken over by a president whose narcissistic, antisocial and paranoid personality disorders blind him to the immoral, illegal and unconstitutional actions he is taking. As a former Army officer, I took an oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” That’s not an oath of loyalty to the president or any other official. Actually, I think all U.S. citizens have the same obligation, whether or not they took an official oath. It’s our assurance that we will support and protect the American values we cherish.
Donald Trump has enacted a slew of executive orders, including some that are unlawful or unconstitutional. For example, he proposed eliminating birthright citizenship established by the 14th Amendment (1868). He is freezing federal funding for numerous programs that he doesn’t like. Only Congress has control of spending that they have authorized. The Supreme Court ruled in 1975 in Train v. City of New York that the president had no power to overrule Congress by impounding funding.
Trump pardoned 1,500 legally convicted insurrectionists while professing support for tougher laws and law enforcement. He has fired people who investigated or prosecuted the Jan. 6 insurrection, or investigated any of his potentially illegal activities, or were top officials in the FBI and DOJ or state attorney’s general during any of the Trump investigations. He says he will fire 6,000 FBI agents if they refuse to declare loyalty to him. This is revenge and retaliation. By the way, career civil servants cannot be fired without cause. I doubt that loyalty to the president is sufficient cause. His demand for loyalty seems unlimited.
Trump’s Cabinet nominations include people who are incompetent, inexperienced and unqualified. The only requirement for nominees is loyalty to himself. At least his Cabinet candidates have to go through a nominal Senate confirmation. Billionaire Elon Musk is a rich, loyal ally who is unelected and has no official credentials, security clearance or government experience. He has been allowed to commandeer the U.S. Treasury’s payment system storing financial information on millions of Americans and American businesses. He and his team also accessed classified files from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) without any security clearance. They also invaded GSA, SBA, DOL and other government files. His team is six engineers in or recently out of college with no government experience. All of Musk’s actions on the specious DOGE has no legal authority. This is a national security nightmare.
Donald Trump has only one scheme for accomplishing anything — threat, intimidation and bluffing. He has declared a trade war on our top international trading partners. His tariffs have “forced” Canada and Mexico to agree to do what they were already doing and to retaliate with their own tariffs. In spite of “his” Republican party controlling the Senate, House, Supreme Court and presidency, Trump has chosen to initiate a coup d’état. Although unthinkable, this is extremely dangerous for America.
