When you think of USA Hockey, you think of Mike Eruzione, the captain of the 1980 Olympic team who scored the game-winning goal in the iconic semifinal matchup against the Soviet Union.
On Thursday night in Boston, Rizzo was once again representing Team USA as honorary captain at the 4 Nations Face-off championship against Canada, but he made sure the name on the back of jersey was as prevalent as the one on the front.
The gold medal-winner took the ice wearing a No. 13 Johnny Gaudreau sweater, paying tribute the late American star who was killed along with his brother Matthew by an alleged drunk driver in August.
Johnny Hockey wouldn’t have just loved a night like Thursday in Boston, he almost certainly would’ve been a massive part of it as one of the top American skaters in the NHL. It’s another reminder that while he’s gone way too soon, the Gaudreaus are far from forgotten.
