The Jacksonville Jaguars are predicted to make a key free agent addition at a big position of need this offseason.
Pro Football Network recently selected one free agent that each team needs to sign this offseason. For the Jaguars, PFN chose to address cornerback by signing Byron Murphy.
“The team could benefit from an upgrade after its defense ranked 31st last season. Putting a rookie in there can be tough, so an experienced player like Byron Murphy, who also has a game-breaking upside, is especially enticing. He will be a costly option but could be a long-term starter for the franchise at a key position.”
Murphy was a second-round pick in 2019 by Arizona and he’s spent the last two seasons with Minnesota.
Murphy primarily lined up on the boundary last season but does have quite a bit of nickel experience as well. While he allowed of completion rate of 71%, Murphy did hold pass catchers to just 10.1 yards per catch and had terrific ball production this past season with six interceptions and five pass breakups.
The Jacksonville pass defense last season struggled mightily, and finding a more reliable boundary corner opposite of Tyson Campbell should be a priority this offseason.
Pro Football Focus is projecting that Murphy signs a three-year deal worth $52 million in free agency. Murphy is PFF’s sixth ranked cornerback on their free agency big board and the 33rd ranked free agent overall.
The general consensus at this time is that the Jaguars are going to address the defensive side of the ball in free agency, and this isn’t the first time that cornerback has come up.
The NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe recently mentioned that he could see the Jaguars’ defense getting a “big overhaul” in free agency. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler would mention that the cornerback position is one to keep an eye on for the Jaguars.
