What’s long been expected appears to be finalized, as longtime quarterback Trenton Bourguet revealed on his social media he is joining the ASU football staff.
Bourguet will be the assistant running backs coach working under position coach Shaun Aguano, who was on the Sun Devils’ staff for each of Bourguet’s six seasons in Tempe.

Aguano served as interim head coach in 2022 following Herm Edwards’ departure, which was when Bourguet threw a career-best 11 touchdowns with a career-best 1,490 passing yards. Each of his starts that season came with Aguano leading the team.

In an era where changing schools has become the norm — especially when faced with limited playing time — Bourguet was a rarity, sticking in Tempe for six seasons through a coaching change (2019-24).

Head coach Kenny Dillingham emphasized the importance of having coaching roles filled by good people on Wednesday, giving a killer analogy about how putting hot sauce on ice cream can ruin a good thing immediately.

“Obviously, Trenton’s a great leader, voted onto the leadership council again,” Dillingham said of Bourguet’s character on Nov. 25 ahead of the Territorial Cup.
“I think it was important for people to see him step out on that field on senior night and go be a part of the coin toss for what he’s done for this program, what he’s done for the community,” the coach continued. “I think that entire family is all in ASU, all in Sun Devils. They’ve got great passion, great confidence, a great voice for the program.
“And I think Trenton’s gonna be phenomenal as a coach in the next chapter of his life, he already is. He’s been on the 7-on-7 circuit, you know, dicing people up left and right. When we have our games out there where we have our younger guys scrimmage, he calls the plays for us. So we’re already getting him involved and I’m just blessed to have him as part of the program.”
Bourguet will be another familiar face on an offensive staff filled with them, as ASU extended offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo while retaining each position coach, including Aguano, wide receivers coach Hines Ward, tight ends coach Jason Mohns and offensive line coach Saga Tuitele.
