Orange, Chatham County Schools Set for Another Remote Learning Day After Wed. Snowfall

After several inches of snow fell on the Triangle through Wednesday, some local school districts are again turning to remote learning options for their students and staff.

Orange County Schools and Chatham County Schools each shared alerts shortly after 5:30 p.m. Wednesday to families saying they are both once again doing virtual instruction for Thursday.

The winter weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service was extended to 1 p.m. on Thursday for Orange and Chatham counties, as freezing overnight temperatures would compound already-slick conditions caused by the snow and precipitation. Additionally, Thursday’s temperatures are forecasted to just be marginally warmer than Wednesday — hovering around or below freezing for much of the day.

Despite consecutive remote learning days, and prior cancellations of school this winter from inclement weather, neither of Orange County’s school districts are facing makeup days yet. Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools — which had not yet made an announcement as of 5:50 p.m. for Thursday instruction — has four remaining days of remote learning left in the academic year, since North Carolina law allows for the allocation of five remote learning days. Orange County Schools will have four remaining days after Thursday, since it cancelled instruction and held makeup days of class in late January following snowy weather.

CHCCS said in its Tuesday alert that district leaders have not decided whether to use the scheduled teacher workdays on March 7 and March 28 as makeup days for students.

Similar to Wednesday, Orange County Schools will contact families and students by email or through the school websites to share assignments for remote learning. Attendance will be counted based on students’ completion of the work, which must be turned in at most three days after a return to in-person instruction. All learning will be asynchronous.

Classes for UNC students and professors are canceled as the campus remains in Condition 2 through 11:59 a.m. Thursday. University officials have not yet provided an update on whether that condition will be extended further due to hazardous travel conditions to and from campus.
